Le Mondine or “The Weeders”, were an agricultural workforce made up of mostly women in northern Italy. During the 1940’s, these women took to the rice fields to maintain Italy’s massive rice economy. Not only did they take on the grueling task of weeding the rice fields, but they also won the fight to gain cultural recognition for women in an era of unequal opportunity. These hard-working ladies always held their composure, regardless of their daily conditions.
This restaurant is an ode to the rice weeders, and the parallel between them and the women of our upbringing in an Italian household. We’re sure some of you can relate.
